Mosaic superellipse

Fritz Hansen - Bisazza

“...I was asked to intervene with the mosaic on the Superellipse table, conceived in 1968 by the designers Arne Jacobsen and Bruno Mathsson, together with the mathematician Piet Hein, who invented for that very project an unprecedented shape, intermediate between the ellipse and the rectangle, calling it Superellipse.’

Bisazza and Fritz Hansen. Glass mosaic and an iconic industrial design object. A combination of ironic reinterpretation and high-tech construction for the already world-famous table by Fritz Hansen now provocatively clad in a precious dress cut to measure on its sinuous body.

It is in this visionary perspective that the Superellipsse table embraces the new Bisazza décors, where the mosaic is not heavily superimposed on the object, but becomes an integral part of it, delicately inserting itself on the surface of the table, coplanar to its laminate ’skin“. To achieve this goal, a lightened aluminium and rubber panel with high rigidity was used, a highly technological product, to which various glass and gold mosaic decorations from my collection were applied, covered with a final layer of transparent and highly polished resin, which increased the mosaic's jewel-like setting effect. The shape, which often returns in my designs, recalls with its sinuosity the atmospheres of the 1940s, a shape that I then reproposed also in the carpets on which the tables were placed, almost as if they were a mirror, an echo of the shape of the table inlay. An icon ironically reinterpreted in a context that I wanted to be serious and elegant, with majestic pendant lamps reflected in large mirrors with gold mosaic frames. In this context, the neo-classical silhouette created the right frame to marry the strength of an object of great impact such as the Fritz Hansen table and the provocative and ironic impetus of the new decorations created for Bisazza, putting two prestigious design brands on an equal footing.
